You might think that you just need a web designer to create your website, but in many cases you might need more than just a website designer. Nowadays professionally created websites are coded in what we call tableless XHTML and CSS. It's not an easy process and best suited to people who are able to work logically and systematically. With so many browser quirks to take in to account the CSS Developer needs to stay constantly updated to ensure their code is valid and accurately displays the site on a variety of platforms.
Web Developers
It doesn't matter what technology is used, PHP, ASP.NET, Java or Python, a web developer needs to turn the static website in to a powerful, database driven application. Smaller projects may only need one web developer but larger projects may need a team of developers with a team leader micro-managing the day to day taskes.
Software Testers
This often overlooked role is a vital step in the website project process because a software tester will test and inspect every element of your site to ensure that it is working as it was intended. Not only that but they ensure that it works on a variety of different browsers. There is usually several iterations at this point with the project being passed back and forth between the developers and testers as all the bugs are worked out.
With so many different people involved in a web development project it's easy to see how the costs can quickly escalate from what you might consider to be a quick project. One point to note is that while there are some 'jack-of-all-trades' freelancers that can design, code and test they are unlikely to be as effective as someone who specializes in a certain area.
