All PC users typically have a variety of Application Software - specialized programs or groups of programs that yield a specific set of unique functions - that they depend upon. If that PC is in your office then these are normally applications that you cannot function adequately without. Most firms in corporate America have IT groups that take care of the maintenance of these applications. That is not so for people who work from home. {These users must maintain their own applications. | The Applications on PCs in these environments will need to be maintained by the user - You.
Our natural tendency is of course to install an application and use it in its installed state forever - meaning, typically the life of the PC that it is on. This, however, is a childish thought. There are numerous causes and reasons why your application platforms will need to be or should be altered. We are using the word ‘altered’ here to encompass updates, repair, add-on, and primarily Version Control.
Most of us are annoyed by having to purchase newer versions of expensive software. So, we normally wait until we get a new PC. Often we are driven to it - i.e. application upgrades - when we acquire a new PC as the issues of supported versions, operating system compatibility and the like come into play. We believe that waiting to be forced to upgrade is unwise. The maintenance of current-version status on most applications encompasses everything from productivity to security issues.
It can also be extremely unproductive to use out-of-date applications that are inconsistent with the rest of the computer industry.
Given the assumptions of this article - that there are multiple reasons for maintaining good Version Control of your applications - how does one go about doing it effectively and efficiently?
First of all engage in good physical controls. Many people buy software, install it and - perhaps months later after a head-crash - cannot even locate the CD or retrieve the Application’s Authorization Code. Simple things like these are critical to good Version Control.
Ensure that all your applications are registered with the Vendor. If the need for a replacement CD arises, then, it will be a simple matter to contact the vendor. Vendor contact also suggests that you have recorded Customer Service numbers and the like.
Finally, the other thing that you can do to increase your productivity and reduce errors and wasted time is to avoid running duplicate versions of any application. What we mean by this is running, for instance, an Office 2000 Version of FrontPage on the same system with the full MS Office 2007. Doing this will cause many problems - some of which will not even become evident to you.
You should also maintain your system registry constantly. There is commercially available registry software that allows you to perform the necessary registry fix operations and achieve the necessary Registry Repair.
