Other than buying a house, purchasing a car is likely to be one of the largest outlays of money that you will make. If you don’t look after your investment, it can wind up looking second hand very quickly; deteriorating and losing its resale value. As it is already a depreciating asset you will want to do as much as possible to keep it from losing any further value and looking after its appearance is definitely a major facet in holding its value. Repairing paint chips and scratches as soon as they appear is a very important part of looking after your cars appearance.

Touching up the paintwork regularly will go a long way to keeping your car in brand new condition and this has been made so much easier now with some very popular paint repair touch up kits. These kits are readily available, easy to use and so much more affordable than outsourcing the job to your local body shop. Paint repair touch up kits are suitable for chips and scratches and the color can be matched identically so no one will ever know. The instructions included with the kit are easy to understand and should make the process go smoothly.

Using a touch up kit for repairing damage to the paintwork is very simple. The first step is to thoroughly clean the area you wish to touch up. Remove all protective layers including wax products that may be present. The car should be cool to the touch, not hot straight out of the sun or icy cold. The temperature you apply the paint in should also be over 50 degrees Fahrenheit. This will ensure that the paint you apply stays put and does not separate upon application. Once you have prepared the area, follow the instructions on the touch up kit. This will usually involve a two step process whereby the color is touched up followed by a protective layer. Patience is a definite must if you have to apply more than one coat of touch up paint to the areas. It will take between 24 hours to 7 days until the paint has fully cured, however, it will be water resistant and durable almost instantly.

If rust is present in the chip or scratch, it will need to be removed before applying any touch up paint to the vehicle. If you try to touch up over the rust, it becomes an exercise in futility. Consult your paint repair kit supplier for suggested products if this is the case. A paint repair job should last for the remaining life of the car if the right product is applied.

You will be able to use the paint touch up repair kit for all sorts of damage including deep scratches, wide scratches, key scratches and even road rash. Generally speaking, darker colored cars will repair better than lighter colored cars; however, from a distance of 3 feet, your car will look brand new no matter what its color or age.
