Country musician Brad Paisley leads this year s nominations for the 43rd Annual County Music Association Awards with seven nods. The announcement came in early September. Paisley has been nominated for the coveted Entertainer of the Year, as well as Best Male Vocalist, Best Album, Single, Song and Music Video. Paisley and Keith Urban each picked up an additional nomination a day after the official award nomination announcements (Thurs., Sept. 10) after organizations revealed that they had accidentally omitted the two stars recording of Start a Band from the category called Musical Event of the Year.
We take the integrity of the CMA Awards balloting very seriously, CMA CEO Tammy Genovese said. And when an oversight like this occurs, we commit ourselves to a thorough review, thoughtful and immediate correction and complete disclosure and accountability to the artists and our industry. The West Coast run of American Saturday Night saw Paisley selling over 100,000 tickets in cities like Bakersfield, San Francisco, Sacramento, Phoenix, San Diego and Irvine before he moved on to Florida with shows in Jacksonville and others.
The final tally puts him at the top, ahead of his fellow country stars as he finishes up his American Saturday Night West Coast run by mid October. The biggest success that has come his way hasn t been his 10 million plus albums sold, 14 consecutive chart topping singles or the 23 Academy of Country Music/Country Music Association Awards under his belt, but rather smaller, more meaningful performances like the one in July to just 400 people.
Four audience members that time around happened to be the Obamas, as the country star performed in the East Room at the White House, and he said to the San Diego Union Tribune, More than anything, it was humbling. It was such a pride filled moment for me to be standing there, in front of the leader of the free world, and to be one on the short list of people who have actually done a concert inside the walls of the White House. Plus, I got to stand on stage in the White House and say: You re the first president my two young sons will remember. That tells you how different their lives will be and how their perceptions will be so different than mine.
To showcase his appreciation for all the changes, Paisley wrote the single Welcome to the Future, which is now number six on the Billboard charts and five on the MediaBase country singles chart. The single was even chosen as Spin s 20 Best Summer Songs of 2009 featuring lyrics that go: I had a friend in school/ Running back on a football team/ They burned a cross in his front yard/ For asking out the homecoming queen/ I thought about him today/ Everybody who s seen what he s seen/ From a woman on a bus/ To a man with a dream/ Hey, wake up Martin Luther/ Welcome to the future/ Hey, glory glory hallelujah/ Welcome to the future. If you want to hear this song performed live, see this country star perform it during the CMA Awards or during his fall stretch of American Saturday Night.
