Those with good financial resources may simply want to pay a private investigator to perform this function.
Assuming that you are not in this category, be sure to prevent your target from being able to trace background check activity to your identity. That means using a public-access internet terminal - like in the public library - is a good place to start. You might even want to create a new, separate email account for all communication with organizations that you will contact. This is relatively easy to do, with free email accounts, etc.
Now, you should start with a financial and criminal background check. Again, there are multiple free-access details on how to do this online without compromising your identity or violating the law yourself. If you find questionable results - like multiple marriages, unknown address search, warrants, etc. then you can pursue each one of these until you have a complete picture. Then you should prepare yourself for some heartbreaking news. If the early results are pretty negative, the rest will paint a much uglier picture.
Many people find that after commencing this type of effort to find a person in public records and do a background check they feel both guilty and a sense of doom to the relationship that they had not felt before and just break off contact at that point. Most experts agree, if you start this process it’s a good idea to finish it - at least to be sure of your assumptions.
