Fiber optics is basically a technology that uses thin and hollow glass threads in order to transmit data. Fiber optic cable is one that consists of large number of cables and each single cable is capable of transmitting large amount of messages. Data is modulated with light and is then transmitted. The property of light that is commonly known as total internal reflection is its basic principle. When a beam of light passes from denser medium to a less dense medium, reflection occurs and light ray moves away from normal. Therefore if the angle of incidence is changed to such an extent that light ray bends 90 degrees to the normal. This angle is known as critical angle. The angle of incidence beyond which critical angle increases is known as total internal reflection. Fiber optics is mainly based on this phenomenon.
Fiber optics dominate other methods for transferring information due to its advantageous characteristics. The use and demand for fiber optics has grown tremendously over the years. The biggest advantage is, it does not send the data continuously but in series of 1 and 0.
Telephone lines that comes to your home are also made up of fiber cables because the signal remains undistorted at the receiver's end. The signal does not attenuate, thus possessing a complete signal strength. Electromagnetic interference and radio frequency interference do not degrade its performance. The data carrying capacity of optical fibers is also more than the traditional systems.
Optical fibers are least affected by temperature variations and the bit error rate is also less as compared to copper wires. So these are secure and has increased data transmission rates and reduced the costs.
Flexibility is also an advantageous feature of this technique which makes it easy for transportation. Other than this, optical fibers posses light weight that makes them portable as compared to conventional copper wires and occupies very less space. Besides this, they are very beautiful so can be used for decorating homes. These are even used in digital cameras these days.
Since optical fibers are constructed using sand and silica that are available in plenty, the technology is very cheap. Also, being flexible it provides ease of installation and transportation.

It has become a media of choice in all commercial buildings as well. Optical fibers find place in biomedical industry, mechanical imaging and many more.
