“It’s like one big family’ are the words most students use to describe life at Tallulah Falls School. A very big “family” as families go, but small compared to average schools sizes. Up to 140 boys and girls, sixth through 12th grades, are housed in two dorms, Teacher pupil ratio is about 1 to 12 with a support staff ranging from dorm parents to maintenance personnel, all considered by the students as members of the family.
Although the accredited school, established in 1909, stresses academic excellence and gives it every chance to flourish, this never takes priority over recognition of each students personal worth, unique talents and gifts. Each boy and girl is encouraged to find his or her way to become involved, participate in something personally meaningful It may be cheerleading, music, sports, arts, gym, drama or work on one of the student committees, planning weekend entertainment or excursions, or deciding on the topic and who will be guest speaker at Chapel. Chapel attendance is required.
The school is not church affiliated, although the traditional values of respect for self and others, and responsibility for one’s own choices are the essence of everyday life in classroom, dorm and at play. The work ethic is strong here too, and every student, regardless of financial means, is required to do an equal share of the chores. Students cook, serve meals, do dishes, clean classrooms and offices, and even load hay (the school operates a small farm).
One three-day weekend a month is open weekend” for trips home by family car or by chartered bus as far as Atlanta, Other weekends include trips to movies, skating rinks, nearby attractions or hiking and skiing. There are two long breaks-Christmas and spring holidays-and parents may also plan other weekend visits at home or school.
