What do you remember from your childhood? Do you have a memory of a favorite activity or tradition? We don’t remember much about the day to day routine of growing up, but special events and traditions stick with us and become golden memories, the good old days. Even if traditions don’t seem like much to adults, they are important to children and they become more magical as years go by.
The traditions and memories we bring with us to adulthood have helped to shape us into the people we are today. The way we view holidays and family time is affected by the way we experienced them in our youth. Have you ever wondered if someone who dislikes the holidays had a miserable childhood? On the flip side, many adults still have the childlike excitement about holidays and family events, because they associate happy memories with those things.
Many people mistakenly think that spending time with family and building traditions is an expensive task. Not at all! You do not have to spend money to make memories with your family. Of course you will want to make special events and days memorable, but that doesn’t have to mean it costs a lot.
Take your family for a summer picnic around the same time every year. Go to the same place, a park or the shore of a lake. Play games and enjoy each other’s company. Invite other family members or friends to go along. My family always went to a popular hot springs on the Fourth of July every year. We would go with family friends and the group grew every year. That was the only time we saw some of these friends all year. All the families brought something for a potluck picnic and it was so good! Thirty years later I can still picture that place and remember the fun we had.
Go to a holiday parade every year. Maybe you will choose a Christmas parade or a summer parade, just sit along the curb and enjoy the sites. Kids love parades and staking out a spot on the street is most of the fun! Take games and snacks to enjoy while you wait. Your family will remember the waiting as much or more than the actual parade!
You can even make annual household chores a fun tradition. Have a leaf raking party and bonfire – if it is legal where you live. Plan a delicious warm meal to enjoy after the work is done – warm bread, hot soup and cozy hot cocoa.
Family traditions will bring your family closer together and strengthen family ties. The memories you build today will help build love and unity for the future.
