A focal point is necessary in any sitting room. Although this is often the fireplace it can be a window or a television or even a large piece of furniture. All furniture should be arranged around this central feature to provide the right look and feel. In a sitting room conversation is likely to be an important use of the room. Creating a conversation area is extremely important and if the room is very large you may want more than one. People should be able to talk easily to one another without having to shout or strain their necks. This is another important rule and is often why sofas and chairs are arranged in a triangular pattern. The final rule to take into consideration is keeping the layout easy to navigate. In other words being able to move freely around the sitting room is important. Dont block any areas off with furniture making movement restrictive.
Sofas and chairs are large items so should be placed in the room first. To make sure you dont buy something too big or too small you should measure up the area and ideally produce a scaled floor plan so you can draw in the sofa to see if it looks right. If the room is large go for big furniture so it doesnt look dwarfed. The same advice should be followed for rugs too. Anything too small will look out of place. Area rugs should be large enough so all four legs of the furniture sitting underneath can rest comfortably on the rug.
When it comes to a coffee table, it is height that is the primary concern. The height should be slightly lower than the sofa it sits next to. The length of the table should be less than the length of the sofa by around one third. A coffee table should sit close enough to the sofa so that the person sitting doesnt have to get up to reach their drink, but not too close that leg room is restricted. You should also have one or two side tables in the room. Every chair in fact should have a small table next to it as otherwise those chairs will never be used. The tables should be the same height as the arm of the chair.
If you follow these rules then you will end up with a sitting room that not only looks great but is extremely functional too. Although some of these ideas seem like common sense, it is surprising how often they are ignored to result in a room that doesnt quite flow properly.
