Since the conception of time humans crave symmetry, discipline, order and prefer to have everything in line even though many of us do not show it or abide by it but human nature dictates it. If you look at the military, police or another branch of law enforcement or if you would look at hospitals places where one needs to display a sequence and a methodical manner you will have a business uniform. The purpose of a uniform is to give respectability to the job that you are wearing it for. It causes people to take notice and be aware of what you might do for a living.
A business uniform does not necessarily mean specific attire like in hospitals or anything related to the military. You might even wear a one at your office if there is a dress code spelled out. The uniform has become almost compulsory today as it projects the image of a team, people working together and working successfully. If the business uniform is shabby, the impression you will get will most probably be the same unless you know the person. If you are required to service people or be in the public eye you will more than likely be required to wear a uniform so customers can have confidence in who they are dealing with.
Almost every airline, cruise ship crew, their captains and everybody on every level you will see will be in a business uniform. A uniform does not necessarily spell out only discipline but it is also a great form of identification for the normal person. If you have a dress code in your office then you can even categorize that as a uniform due to the fact that your company has decided to make the dress code as equal to a uniform, you have to be dressed in that specific way. One does not have to wear something of a “uniform” image to become a uniform.
Now, how to make your uniform different? That’s the question many of us ask ourselves who want to give a slightly different impression. Unfortunately, many companies have a strict guideline laid out regarding the material, stitching method and design which one cannot tamper with in any way. For instance, if your company has predefined a shirt or a shirt to be of cotton, you might not be able to convert that into a silk dress or shirt and for exactly this reason it is called a business uniform. There is usually very little room for personal interpretation when it comes to what the uniform needs to be.
Of course if you want to be professional you need to make sure the uniform you are required to wear is in the best possible condition The best thing one can do is keep their business uniform very clean, pressed and maintained along with self grooming and this is one of the almost only way in which you would be able to make a good impression on the other person unless, you have a little room to play.
