This world of ours is fraught with words – books, emails, newspaper, magazines, websites, catalogues and all these demand textual reading. To add to the misery, many people have less time to read the fraction of words which demand their close attention. Hence, speed reading skill is very essential to make oneself fitted in such a situation. Though, speed reading does need practice work, the following mentioned tips will guide you how to break the code of success in speed reading.

Let your Hand Handle the Task

Your hand plays an important role when it comes to know how to read faster. Eyes are naturally attracted to the things in motion. Your hand guides your eyes through the text reading process. This technique boosts your concentration level to a great extent as moving the hand simultaneously enables the eyes movement follow the direction of hand on the text. In other words, we can say that hand compels eyes to keep pace with its direction and the brain to pay attention.

If you feel comfortable to read the whole text, let the fingers do the reading. Those who don’t like using the fingers through the contents can use either pen or pencil to guide the eyes along the pages.

Once you become comfortable enough in using your hand as a guiding tool to your speed reading practice, you will wonder why you not tried this trick before.

Change Your Style of Reading

Using your hand as a tool in speed reading will certainly have a noticeable effect, but you also need to regulate your reading speed. It’s a fact that being too fast will render you senseless of the text read and being too slow make you clumsy. Another common sight observed in speed reading is that most people tend to read a page word by word as if none is less important than the next one. The fact is they aren’t.

The thing is that when the written text becomes easier to read or you feel that you are reading some fluffy texts, speed up your reading by using your hand. But you need to slow down when the content becomes hard or when you feel an important point is coming next. This technique is identically applied with driving as well – speed up on the straight road but slow down on the sharp turn.

Another technique in this regard is to slow down at the beginning of your reading and go fast with the rest. This will eventually render you into comfortable reading once you become accustomed to this practice.

Lastly, as we warm up our body before starting any hard exercise, we warm up our speed reading practice by previewing the material. If you are reading a book or magazine, just browse through all the headings or sub-headings given there. Read the introduction and conclusion page and then read the text from beginning to the end.

Why is it essential? Because previewing the material will help you understand the informational with better comprehension. Also, it will speed up your reading practice in a meaningful way. So follow these steps and you will become a pro in the field of speed reading.
