A very important thing to remember when you start to learn to play guitar, is to practice correctly. If you start off wrong and improperly practice, it will be a lot harder for you to learn to play guitar because you will have unlearn those wrong techniques which will take much longer than if you started off right. Posture and finger positioning are a couple of the techniques that you will want to get right in the very beginning to get you started on the right foot.

The greatest advances have been made in the guitar instruction that has become available over the internet. There are subscription based sites where you can have access to hundreds of lessons, usually including audio, video, and written materials. There are also many good learn to play guitar software packages you can get. Many of them are instantly downloadable, and allow you to be learning how to play your guitar within minutes of your purchase. This all happens from the comfort of your computer chair at any time.
Whichever style of guitar you choose you will start at the same place. In the early learning stages there's not much difference whether you play Electric or Acoustic because you will probably be starting out at the same place.
If you want to download free chord diagrams and tabulature from the internet then go ahead. This is a great way to start and you will find more information than you can throw a stick at on Google Search. Personally, I advise that you borrow or purchase a book of guitar chords and or tabulature and there are two reasons why I advise this.
Play both acoustic and electric guitars. This will benefit you for when you're in a situation outdoors or at a party somewhere and there are only acoustic guitars available. Acoustic strings are harder to play and will develop calloses much faster on your fingers. This will make playing chords on an electric guitar much easier for you.
You should practice 30 minutes a day. This is very important. You want to be practicing continually so that you can develop those calloses. Also 30 minutes is just right at the start. If you over practice playing the guitar at the beginning your fingers will hurt a lot and that might put you off wanting to play the guitar and we don't want that to happen.
Learning to play guitar online has one major advantage over off line lessons: you can use them over and over, until you're comfortable. Unlike private lessons, there will be no pressure to finish exercises within the hour, there will be no limits to your learning and having to try things on your own, only to find out when you come back for the next lesson that you were doing it the wrong way.
