Like many ancient works, the oldest parts of the Bible were passed along orally before they were ever written down. Many devout Jewish people today believe that the full text of what Christians call "The Old Testament" Bible was given to Moses by God on Mount Sinai. The Bible's earliest origin may always be a matter of faith, but it still remains a fact that after the Bible was first recorded, many different versions existed in several different languages. It was not until the first century B.C.E. (Before the Common Era, aka B.C.) that Jews settled on the canon of their scripture.
Archaeologists have found the earliest known Hebrew text near the area described in the Bible as the battlefield where the young David defeated the Philistine giant Goliath. In June 2008 archaeologists began excavating a tenth century B. C. fortress 5 kilometers (3 miles) south of present-day Bet Shemesh.
Modern Hebrew is a language connected to the history and experiences of the Jewish people. While modern Hebrew is different in certain respects to the language of the Hebrew Bible, modern Hebrew still connects you to a language that has been used since Biblical times. As a native English speaker, you may find that there are some difficulties associated with learning this beautiful language simply because of how different it is from modern English.
There are somewhat limited options when it comes to finding a Hebrew-English interlinear Bible. First, you could try one of the free online versions; however, the websites that have these are often cumbersome to work with and contain links to Strong's Concordance. I have been studying Hebrew for a considerable number of years now and have never found Strong's to be very helpful. You also have to install fonts on your own which can sometimes cause problems.
The Bible is broken into two parts: The Old Testament and the New Testament. The Old Testament is the history of creation and the Jewish nation, along with stories, writings and warnings from God's prophets.
The New Testament is the story of Jesus and the early Christian church along with instructions on how to be a Christian. We live under the New Testament - which is a new way of life which God set up through Jesus.
Although the Bible was written by so many and over such a wide time frame, its singular unity has no other explanation other than being Divine. All the authors each reveal a side of a multi-faceted gem - the theme of redemption. In Genesis is a tree of life revealed, and then man is forbidden to partake and removed from the Garden. In Revelation, at the end, the Tree is again seen - and redeemed man once again has access to it - because of Christ. In Genesis, the Messiah is promised, and the pictures of the Tabernacle and Temple further illustrate His Coming. In the Gospels, He that was promised comes, and fulfills that which God had promised - redemption from sin for those who believe. Finally, in Genesis a redemption from Satan's work and influence is promised, and in Revelation, that Kingdom is finally established, and righteousness reigns forever - as He
said.
