Cambodia is a state that is still emerging from a tragic past of invasion, combat and invasion. A land of outstanding splendor and cultural history it should beyond doubt be on any holidaymakers must visit list.

The capital city Phnom Penh with its tree lined avenues shows the captivating combination of French and Khmer inspiration. The city has been the control centre for Cambodia since the fifteenth century and has found countless changes. From here you can witness the outcome of the horrible twentieth century regime of Pol Pot and the Khmer Rouge, especially in the killing fields of Choeung Ek.
One route to travel from the present capital of Phnom Penh and the Angkor Temples at Siem Reap is to sail on the mighty Mekong River. Diverse cruising methods are on hand including a sail on a traditionally built wooden cruiser. If you are travelling between June and October you will witness one of natures marvels as you sail over the Tonle Sap lake that at this time of year floods to become South East Asia's largest fresh water lake. At ten times its regular mass it becomes dotted with masses of floating villages with their stilted wooden structures. As you sail its waters take time to stop off at one the many floating shops and restaurants. If your time is too fleeting for cruising you can take one of the countless day or half day excursions on the lake from the Siem Reap side of the lake.
Siem Reap is a hive of activity largely because of the beautiful Angkor Wat temples that rise majestically out of the jungle. This is the heart and soul of the Khmer way of life and history. The temple complex is spread out over one hundred and fifty five square kilometres throughout the Cambodian jungle so unless you are in the area for a long time you have to choose your temple visits with care. Whatever your choice of itinerary you cannot fail to be impressed with the five hundred year reign of the Khmer empire.
As for lodging in Cambodia there is masses to choose from and there are prices and styles to suit all tastes from cheap backpackers hostels through locally run guest houses to the more luxurious and sumptuous 5 star Hotels.
Whenever you decide to visit Cambodia you are sure to be captivated.
