Playing a guitar is a skill that requires time to enhance. For when you first start out, learning guitar is like a baby learning to walk for the first time. Only a handful of people can pick up a guitar, or any instrument for that matter, and learn by ear. Only a select few can master the guitar without the need of primarily learning guitar chords.

Learning how to play a guitar takes loads of rehearsal. It requires an awareness of how the musical instrument works, where you should place your hands and fingers, and how to put them all together to actually make music. Whenever you watch and listen to how a guitarist works his stuff, he makes it seem very easy as beautiful music flows from the instrument, and his fingers blur across the strings and frets. However, only lots of practice can make this sort of difficult instrument look so easy to play.

Holding The Instrument

In learning to play a guitar, the very first thing you have to practice is how to hold the instrument. To start off, place the guitar under the crook of your right arm so that your right hand is directly over the hole where the strings are. Note that this is for right handed guitarists. Next, place your left hand along the fret, or the arm of the guitar. You should hold the guitar in such a way that your left thumb rests over the the surface of the fret bar, allowing all your fingers easy access to the strings along the fret. You must practice strumming the guitar, without learning any of the actual notes or chords yet, so that you will get comfortable holding and playing the said instrument.

Tuning A Guitar

One of the vital aspects of learning to play the guitar is tuning it. When the instrument is playing each note properly, it means the guitar is correctly 'tuned'. If the guitar is out of tune, then every note shall be inappropriate probably you won't be able to play properly. The music will be off and you will soon become frustrated, and quit--thinking that it's you who was messing up. It's not you; you just have to appropriately tune the musical instrument. You can study how you can tune the instrument by ear, or you can do what lots of people do when they're first learning to play the guitar--using an electric tuner. An electric tuner will immediately evaluate if the guitar is in tune. You only need to strum each string then adjust the guitar until the tuner registers that every things in their proper tune.

There, now you're ready to learn how to play notes, chords, and even songs. Just remember it takes patience, conviction, and interest to completely learn how to play a guitar. But once you do learn you will have a skill for life that will give you so much enjoyment.
