It would be very costly to fix a sewer system in rural areas where the houses are built far away to each other. Hence people plant their own private sewage treatment plant, which is known as septic tanks.

Normally a septic tank is a big solid or steel tank that is covered in the yard. Usually its strength to hold the water is 1,000 gallons which is nearly equal to 4,000 liters. The waste water runs into the tank at one end and flows through the other end. The homeowners have their own septic system which is not distributed with anyone else.

A septic system consists of a septic tank and a weeping bed for the waste. This system is attached to the home via a large back pipe leading out of your basement which carries all household waste.

The generic law for the septic system is that it has to be at the alternative end of the land to your well which gives you fresh water for drinking. The key factor of the septic system is that it is important to keep the system rotting the waste that goes into the tank. Remember not to use chemicals which will further kill the bacteria in the septic tank. Only the good waste and the toilet water should run into the septic system. If use bleach, it will also kill the bacteria in the septic tank.

Septic tanks are made of one large concrete box with two compartments. One compartment accepts the waste as it is flushed into the septic tank the other compartment accepts the liquid or grey water after it is decomposed.

If you don't have your tank regularly pumped out there will build up a crust which has to be removed.

If you follow the handling of the waste and do regular pumping out of the tank then you will find the septic system neither hard nor irritating.

The tanks have to be changed in a periodical basis from 20-25 years as it is made up of concrete. So look it to check when was the tank last replaced, else you have to do it. If you plan to get a new tank then you have to get a new weeping bed also.
