An expensive art work is what an inexpensive print or poster could become if you are able to select for it just the right framing selections. A wise decision to make is to go for mat colors that can enhance your art. Should you prefer the mat to pick up a color from the image then a double or triple mat is ideal. Top mats are best when in a neutral shade while colors are great for bottom mats. If you want to add dimension then get double and triple mats.

Determining the mat width comes with considering the width of the frame as well as the size of the piece. There should be no common width for the mat and frame. What happens is a striped appearance that detracts from the image is formed. The bottom mat of a double mat should extend at least one half inch. What you should do with mats is see to it that all sides have the same width.

Take note of floating prints and images that may have distinctive edges. When an image is floating then it is hinged to the front of your mat board. Around the image is a border via the mat board. When a deckled print cannot be perfectly centered on a mat because it is uneven it is still acceptable. Cutting the mats to place over the edges of a print is a good option especially when there is nothing distinctive about the edges.

A tricky business is what framing photographs is. Considering formal photographs like wedding pictures and portraits ornate wood frames in silver, gold and a variety of natural finishes are great but considering art photos including those in black and white simple wood or metal frames in black or silver or with light natural wood frames should be used. Competition for the grays in black and white photographs are gold finished or cherry wood frames.

Ornate frames compliment antique photographs. Resort to silver framing when dealing with old black and white photos. Antiqued gold finished frames and dark wood frames like mahogany, cherry and ebony walnut bring out sepia tones. Fabric liners and ornate mouldings are great to use for traditional paintings including portraits and landscapes. Without liners, simple frames would work great on contemporary paintings.

In framing there are other used besides for paintings, photographs, prints, and posters. What could be framed are political buttons, old letters and postcards, fabrics, theater tickets, christening dresses that you may want to hang at home or in the office. When it comes to gallery style framing the minimalist look applies. Other than matte black wooden frames ones with natural finishes are also used here.

Only straight edges exist with these frames and there is no ornamentation. Other than being 8 ply thick the mats used for gallery style framing come in different shades of white. Considering a small image measuring around 3 by 5 inches, mats measuring 5 inches can be placed on all sides. What the heavy mats do is make the piece look important aside from drawing into the image the viewer's eye.

The reason why ornate wooden frames are popular with antique furnishings and reproductions is that they work well. When it comes to the high sheen silver and gold frames, these reflect the luxurious mood of the 1980s whilst the reserved spirit of the 1990s comes through in antiqued silver and gold frames. Comparing the metal frames from a decade ago and industrial metal frames there are lots of variations. Other than brushed finishes with cross hatching, the new ones have cleaner lines and are much wider. Like earlier metal frames, they're one of the most economical framing choices available.

It is because of famous photographers that art photography has been revitalized but it is due to restoration services that the restoration and framing of your family's own antique photographs grew popular. As time passes the value of antique posters increase and although they are expensive to frame they are still less expensive when compared to many original artworks. They also are great for loft dwellers and other people who have lots of wall space.
