An expensive art work is what an inexpensive print or poster could become if you are able to select for it just the right framing selections. Remember that mat colors should only enhance and not match art. When you want a mat to pick up a color from the image you should get a double or triple mat. Neutral shades are best for top mats while bottom mats can be rather colorful. A sense of dimension results when double and triple mats are used in framing.

The important considerations when it comes to mat width include the size of the piece as well as the width of the frame. Mat and frame should never be the same width. Ending up detracting from the image is the formed striped appearance. At least one half inch is how much the bottom mat of a double mat should extend to. All sides of the mat should have the same width for it to look good.

Probably you have some floating prints and images with distinctive or deckled edges. Floating means that the image is attached or hinged to the front of your mat board. Borders are created around images when there are mat boards. It's okay if a print with a deckled edge is uneven, and therefore not perfectly centered on the mat. Taking into consideration that there is nothing distinctive about the edges then the mat can be cut and the pieces placed over the edges of the print.

There are times when framing photographs becomes a challenge. What works well for formal pictures like wedding photographs and portraits are ornate wood frames in silver, gold and a variety of natural finishes but simple wood or metal frames in black or silver or with light natural wood frames are ideal when it comes to art photographs especially ones in black and white. For black and white photographs a competition with the grays happen when gold finished or cherry wood frames are used.

Considering antique photographs, ornate frames should be used. Working best for old black and white photos are silver frames. Antiqued gold finished frames and dark wood frames like mahogany, cherry and ebony walnut bring out sepia tones. Should you have traditional paintings including portraits and landscapes go for fabric liners and ornate mouldings. Simple frames without liners work best for contemporary paintings.

Other than for paintings, photographs, prints, and posters framing has other uses. You can display christening dresses, political buttons, theater tickets, fabrics, and old letters and postcards in your home or at the office after having them framed. The minimalist look applies to gallery style framing. Matte black wooden frames or ones with natural finishes are used here.

Only straight edges exist with these frames and there is no ornamentation. In different shades of white come the mats used for gallery style framing which are 8 ply thick. 5 inch mats can be placed around something as small as an image that measures 3 by 5 inches. The heavy mat makes the piece look important and the depth of the mat draws the viewer's eye into the image.

Remaining popular especially for antique furnishings and reproductions are ornate wooden frames. When it comes to the high sheen silver and gold frames, these reflect the luxurious mood of the 1980s whilst the reserved spirit of the 1990s comes through in antiqued silver and gold frames. When it comes to industrial metal frames and metal frames from a decade ago there are a lot of changes. The new ones are wider and have cleaner lines not to mention brushed finishes with cross hatching. Considering framing options, these and earlier metal frames are all economical choices.

For art photography the famous photographers have been able to revitalize it but made popular by restoration services is the restoration and framing of your family's own antique photographs. In terms of antique posters framing them can be expensive but compared to many original artworks they are less expensive and their value continues to increase as time passes. The loft dwellers will benefit from these as well as those who have wall space to spare.
