A number of framing selections have the capability of transforming your inexpensive prints or posters into works of art that seem to be rather expensive. When it comes to mat colors these should enhance and not match art. Consider a double or triple mat if you want it to pick up a color from the image. Bottom mats should have color but top mats should remain neutral. To add dimension when framing go for double and triple mats.

Should you want to determine the mat width then you should take note of the size of the piece and the width of the frame. Never make your mat and frame of the same width. From this comes about a striped pattern that detracts from the image. Considering the bottom mat of a double mat it should extend one half inch. The same width should be used on all sides of every mat for it to look good.

You may have some floating prints and images that have deckled edges. Hinged to the front of your mat board is a floating print. With the mat board a border is created around the image. Although a print with uneven deckled edges is not perfectly centered on the mat it is still okay. Mats can be cut and then placed over the edges of an image considering that there is nothing distinctive about the edges.

People can have a hard time framing photographs. Ornate wood frames in silver, gold and a variety of natural finishes may work with wedding photos, portraits, or other formal photographic images, old and new, but art photographs, especially black and white, work best with simple wood or metal frames in black or silver or with light natural wood frames. When it comes to gold finished or cherry wood frames, these compete with black and white photographs.

Choose elaborate framing to go with antique photographs. Resort to silver framing when dealing with old black and white photos. Everything from antiqued gold finished frames to wooden ones in cherry, ebony walnut, and mahogany complement sepia prints. Every time you come across traditional paintings including portraits and landscapes fabric liners and ornate mouldings work well. Without liners, simple frames would work great on contemporary paintings.

Framing has a variety of purposes other than being used for prints, posters, photographs, and paintings. There are things you may want to display at home or in your office including political buttons, old letters and postcards, fabrics, theater tickets, christening dresses and these could all be framed. Associated with gallery style framing is the minimalist look. In general the wooden frames are used here either in matte black or natural finishes.

The frames have no ornamentation, just straight edges. Rather thick are the mats used for gallery style framing coming in 8 ply and with various shades of white. Considering a small image measuring around 3 by 5 inches, mats measuring 5 inches can be placed on all sides. Not only does the heavy mat make the piece look important but the viewer's eye is drawn into the image as well.

Because elaborate wood frames work best with antique furnishings and reproductions they remain popular. Opulence in the 1980s mood is reflected by the high sheen silver and gold frames while represented by the antiqued silver and gold frames is the modest spirit of the 1990s. The industrial metal frames are very different from the metal frames a long time ago. They feature brushed finishes with cross hatching, and are wider and have cleaner lines than their ancestors. Same as earlier metal frames, these are also economical framing options.

When it comes to famous photographers they have been able to bring back art photography while restoration services are to thank for making it popular to restore and frame your family's own antique photographs. When it comes to antique posters they are expensive to frame considering their size but they are less expensive when compared to many original artworks and their value continues to increase with time. People with enough wall space as well as the loft dwellers can benefit from these.
