You need not purchase an expensive work of art for the right framing selections can easily transform an inexpensive print or poster into this. When it comes to mat colors these should enhance and not match art. Consider a double or triple mat if you want it to pick up a color from the image. Go for colorful bottom mats and neutral top mats. Double and triple mats add dimension to your framing.

The important considerations when it comes to mat width include the size of the piece as well as the width of the frame. What needs to differ is the width of the mat and frame. This results in the formation of a striped pattern that detracts from the image. About a half an inch is how long the bottom mat of a double mat should extend. Consider applying a uniform width to the mats for it to look good.

Take note of floating prints and images that may have distinctive edges. Considering a floating image it usually is attached to the front of your mat board. The image gets a boarder when a mat board is used. Acceptable is not placing a print with deckled edges on the center of a mat especially if it is uneven. Should there be nothing distinctive about the edges the mat can be cut and these new pieces can be put over the edges of the image.

When it comes to framing photographs it is not that simple. Great for formal photographs like wedding pictures and portraits are ornate wood frames in silver, gold and a variety of natural finishes but when it comes to art photographs including ones in black and white simple wood or metal frames in black or silver or with light natural wood frames are ideal. A competition with the grays in black and white photographs happens with gold finished or cherry wood frames.

Choose elaborate framing to go with antique photographs. Silver frames bring shades of gray in old black and white photos. Everything from antiqued gold finished frames to wooden ones in cherry, ebony walnut, and mahogany complement sepia prints. Fabric liners as well as ornate mouldings go best with traditional paintings including portraits and landscapes. Refrain from using liners and opt for simple frames for contemporary paintings.

There are other uses for framing besides for posters, photographs, paintings, or prints. If you have things lying around like fabrics, theater tickets, old letters and postcards, political buttons, christening dresses, and many more you can frame these and hang them at home or in the office. When it comes to gallery style framing the minimalist look applies. The frames are made from a variety of woods natural finishes or matte black.

Other than having no ornamentation these frames only have straight edges. For the thick mats used for gallery style framing they come in 8 ply and with various shades of white. Mats that are 5 inches wide can be placed on a small image that measures about 3 by 5 inches. The viewer's eye is drawn into the image by the heavy mats aside from making it seem that the piece is important.

Ornate wood frames remain popular because they work well with antique furnishings and reproductions. Reflecting the opulent mood of the 1980s are the high sheen silver and gold frames whereas the antiqued silver and gold frames reflect the humble spirit of the 1990s. Much different are the industrial metal frames compared to the metal frames from the past. Apart from a wider design and cleaner lines the new ones have brushed finishes with cross hatching. Considering framing options, these and earlier metal frames are all economical choices.

Responsible for bringing back art photography into the scene are famous photographers but responsible for making restoring and framing your family's own antique photographs are restoration services. Other than their value never ceasing to increase with time antique posters are less expensive than many original artworks even if they are rather expensive to frame. The loft dwellers will benefit from these as well as those who have wall space to spare.
