To fulfill a poodle's maternal instincts, there was a psychologist who deals with dogs who prescribed a box turtle. With regard to his profession, he is very serious about it and so he wrote a book he called understanding your dog. When it comes to the credentials of this doctor, he is an associate professor of psychology at local university and associate director for research at the local zoo and his book explains how animals are also individuals. There are times when people assume a lot of things but he is honest in expressing himself.

He talked about a young couple with a dog wherein the dog did not let the husband enter the bedroom at times. Written in his book was how the dachshund owned by the couple would experience catatonic fits when they fought. He says dogs even develop like young children in many ways, and that their body language is similar to humans. In the same way as humans, he says that dogs can tolerate closeness in various ways.

In terms of getting a puppy, the doctor points out how it is best to get one between six and eight weeks old considering the fact that dogs develop through several stages. Don't bother with a puppy older than 10 weeks, unless he's been raised with a lot of people around he advises. It is necessary to see how well it interacts with other puppies before you buy a dog. Being outgoing is not always a plus for the dog can be the most aggressive.

Considering taking along an old scarf or a glove and see if he will play a game of tug of war after investigating it. At five or six weeks, a puppy will not gain anything from discipline training since he will forget it but what this is a good time for is some tender loving care plus the exposure to a number of experiences that will enrich his environment.

As he mentions, at eight weeks there is a sensitive fear period and the owners should be careful enough not to cause any undue trauma for the puppies at this time including a doctor's appointment. By 12 weeks, he says a dog is emotionally bonded to his owner, so discipline training then is not likely to break his spirit or attachment. When it comes to people in various situations, this doctor and holder of a veterinary degree and a doctorate in psychology from a London university has a number of recommendations to give.

For instance, for a family with children in a house, he recommends a golden retriever, for a young couple, any of the terriers, for an apartment couple, a schnauzer, a Yorkshire terrier or a poodle, for an older couple, a Yorkshire terrier, pekingese or pug. Today, he says that it is more difficult to tell the temperament of a dog based solely on the breed. What he attributes this to is less quality in breeding.

What he calls dog breeders are cranks if they engage in a joint effort to change the standards of breeds. According to him, people should not change standards without knowledge of the possible results. Before they are named the best in the breed, there is much emphasis on hoe prize dogs should first be subjected to tests. This is to make sure that the winning dog is no zombie.
