From years of experience in hanging pictures come about certain rules. The only time to hang a picture on a wall is when it seems bare without it and unless you've always yearned to live in an art gallery do not hang pictures on every wall you see. For pictures, you can hang them over a sofa, in groups, over a server, a small pier table, or a console.

A second rule follows. Groupings should never be done wider than the furniture underneath. Hanging pictures closer to one another gives them this unified look even if they are of varying sizes. For instance, let's say you have a prized collection of bird prints in frames of varying sizes and types. Hang them close together in pleasing geometrics not frame against frame, however.

Then there is the third rule. May pictures be hung in close proximity the wall is a frame in itself which serves to set off a group of pictures on all four sides. When it comes to pleasing geometry, this means hanging the pictures so they form a square or a rectangular arrangement. When there are four pictures all framed alike and of the same size with you they could be hung in a straight line over a long table, geometrically in a square over the sofa, or vertically above a small step table. For staircases the step pattern in hanging pictures should be used. The best option to take would involve straight lines meeting at right angles. This is a time when a little regimentation is all you need.

It is possible that you possess a set of pictures that have been accumulated over a lifetime consisting of old family portraits, prints, reproductions, and originals. You should consider framing and matting everything alike to unify them when you plan on hanging them together. Gold frames were used for 16 prints and a friend matted these in forest green. Sensational was the look after being set against a red wall. Resorting to a different color for matting each picture over her sofa a friend added color. Aside from being of the same size there was only one subject for the pictures.

Did you encounter a time when you stared into a department store model room but thought to yourself that it was bare? No signs show that someone had ever slept, ate, lived, and took phone calls in that particular room. There is an absence of individuality. Display yours in your home.

A department store model, remember, is designed to sell furniture, and your home, it is hoped, is designed for your comfort and pleasure. This is where you should go for the color you prefer. Remember that the color you select can affect the mood in the room. A color can evoke a particular emotion. Whenever you feel some difficulty in finding a color for our space then looking at a few color charts would be good. In this case the best choice is your individual choice.
