I wanted to share some basic plumbing tips with everyone, which may help you save money before you decide to call the Plumber.
Keep an eye on that toilet. Toilets are one of the most used plumbing fixtures in your home. It's amazing they last as long as they do. It is inevitable they will fail in some way over the course of their lifetime.
First Toilet Tip- Put about five drops of food coloring in the toilet tank. Now wait about ten minutes, lift the lid and.... Do you see any food coloring? If so you may need to replace your flapper. If no than you are good and your flapper is ok. Replacing a toilet flapper is a simple on two three step fix.
One- Remove the old flapper. You will see two little nubs which connect to the side of the post in the middle of the toilet, pull up on those to remove. In some cases you may have a flapper which actually goes over the tube in the middle. Just pull up on it, all the way to the top to remove it.
Step Two- Take your old flapper to the home center of your choice and try to find one like it. This is not difficult just match it up with your old on or find a universal one to fit. This task is not usually that hard but sometimes it can be confusing with all of the different flappers they have a t the home center so if you start to fell overwhelmed just ask someone at the home center they be able to point you in the right direction.
Step 3 - Replace the old flapper just like you took the old on off. Line up the two little clip with the two knobs on the side of the center post and push them in until you here them click. Now take the chain and remove some slack form it if need be and attach it to the flush handle. You may need to adjust the flapper once you install it to make sure you are getting a good flush and to make sure it is not getting stuck. A few test flushes should get it all straighten out. There you may have saved yourself a good 75 bucks or so.
