It is better to be wrong and miss out on a web site than to be right and have someone be able to take all of your money from remote place. So your first line of defense is your common sense. Now we need the right software
Now that we have the common sense thing out of the way, here comes the fun part, installing the software onto the system. You need the right software so that you are able to navigate the internet safely. The first piece of software that you need is an antivirus program. Antivirus software will go out of its way to try and stop all of the bugs that will try to attack your computer. This means that it will go after viruses, Trojans, Worms, Rootkits and other malware that is out there. After you have installed the antivirus on your system, you might want to install anti spyware software in your system as well. These two programs might have some overlap but overall they do two different things. Spyware focuses on adware and tracking software that might be installed on your system. Antivirus will go after bugs in a more general manner.
Now that we have those two installed, the last thing that you need is a proper firewall on the system. You can use the Windows firewall if you have Windows 7 but if you do not then you should download a third party firewall.
