A tux is the most formal wear a man can wear. Most guys know what one is, but they may not know how to wear it and what type to rent or buy. Although, if you’re an average type guy, you probably won’t find that you’ll need to wear a tux in your life very often, there are at least two occasions that the average guy finds he needs one: for a prom and when or if they get married.

Since deciding on the type of tux to wear can sometimes be a bit tricky, here’s a little help to assist you with your selection of men’s formal wear.

First of all, besides a prom or wedding, do you know when you need to wear a tux? Depending on which social circles you go around in, you may need to wear a tuxedo to a social event. The invite will let you know if you need to wear a tux, so be sure to read the invite carefully. If the invite says Black Tie, Black Tie Invited, Formal or Black Tie Optional, you are expected to dress up which usually means wearing a nice, well fitted tuxedo.

Other occasions where you may need to wear a tux include a formal dinner party or reception, ball or formal dance or dinner at an ultra formal restaurant where the servers are pressed, starched and wearing very nice suits. Often the opening of the symphony, ballet or opera requires that a guy wear a tux, but that depends on where you’re living and the type of ballet, symphony or opera. It also depends where you’re sitting. Life has gotten more casual over the decades and in some cities you may still see people wearing jeans and flannel shirts in the cheaper seats of such events.

To look great in a tux, you need to make sure you follow some basic style tips. Regardless of if you’re buying or renting, don’t go cheap. Choose a suit made out of quality material. Some fashion experts suggest you should buy a quality garment so that it can be custom tailored to your body. But this isn’t a realistic option for every guy.

Traditional colors always look more classy. Unless you’re a groomsman who needs to be precisely matched with what your paired bridesmaid is wearing, try to stay away from colorful socks, ties, cummerbunds and vests. Simple cuts and simple colors will always provide you with the most elegant and timeless look.

Single button style tux jackets are the most flattering on every body type. If you’re not sure what type of jacket to go with, this is your safest choice. Unless you’re a teenager going to a prom, try to stay away from clip on bow ties. Ones that you actually tie yourself always look better. A formal wear sales associate can show you how and with a little practice, you’ll be doing it yourself like a pro. Always wear cummerbunds with the pleats facing up and keep your jacket on at all times if you wear a cummerbund.
