Everyone knows how important a good night’s sleep is for our health and well-being, but about 60% of suffer from sleep disturbance at some point in our lives. When I complained to my friend that I had joined that statistic, she instantly started quizzing me about my mattress. I was defensive at first, because it is relatively new and quite firm, just as I like it, but she pointed out that a mattress that is too hard is just as damaging to your back as a mattress which is too soft.
She told me about memory foam pillows and mattresses, which are rapidly growing in popularity. These mould themselves to the contours of the body to give natural support to your posture so that you sleep in the perfect position. They are constructed from a substance called visco-elastic, which apparently was developed by the NASA scientists back in the sixties, when they need to improve comfort and safety for the astronauts during lift-off and landing. The foam tailors itself to the body for even support and weight distribution, without causing any pressure points.
It wasn’t until the 1990s that the material began to be used in mattress making. This visco-elastic substance is laminated to a high-density polyurethane foam base, allowing airflow between the layers and letting the material breathe. This also increases the depth- resilience which makes it more comfortable. The mattresses were quickly taken up by hospitals and nursing institutions as the mattress of choice, especially for bed-bound patients as the lack of pressure points meant greater comfort and no bed-sores.
These lightweight mattresses do not need flipping in the way conventional mattresses do, which was another plus point in hospitals. During tests, they were found to reduce tossing and turning in sleep from 100 to 17 times a night, which made patients feel much more rested and refreshed. Being anti-bacterial and anti-microbial keeps the mattresses free of dust mites and germs and safe for asthmatics and allergy sufferers.
My friend had had her mattresses for nearly a year and she told me how cosy and warm they are in winter as they act like a cocoon, keeping in body heat. However, she did say her husband sometimes found the mattress too warm in the summer. It is the way the foam reacts to body temperature that enables them to mould to the body’s contours and for which the material gets the name ‘memory foam’. This moulding can, however, restrict movement and may even cause slight difficulty if you try to get out of bed suddenly.
The good thing about memory foam mattresses is that they can be purchased in a wide range of sizes to fit any standard bed frame, as long as it is well-ventilated. They range from small single to super king size. You can also choose different depths.
The memory foam pillows work in the same way as the mattresses, moulding to the shape of your head and neck so that you sleep in the correct position for you. They are very good for relieving aching neck and shoulder muscles and sounded exactly what I needed. My friend told me that since using a memory foam pillow, her husband’s snoring had decreased considerably!
I was so glad my friend had pointed me in the right direction and really couldn’t wait to get home and go online to find a stockist to order my own memory foam pillows and mattress. I know this is going to solve my insomnia and cure all my neck, shoulder and back pains once and for all. I promised my friend that the next time she saw me, she would be looking at a new person.
