Once the children left home my life became a little mundane, I needed to try something different. Before the kids were born I had a career as a PE teacher and thoroughly enjoyed it. I had loads of energy and kept in shape.
I did think of going back to school to teach PE but knew it would be very time-consuming and probably wouldn’t leave me with much free time. I scoured the internet for ideas and thought about working from home. This would give me time to do my household chores and also get back into the world of work. What to do? There were many jobs available from addressing envelopes, writing articles and tele-sales, but none very exciting.
Reading about exercises I came across an advertisement of how to become a personal trainer and at first thought it was beyond me. I had put on a lot of weight from my younger days, plus having a family hadn’t helped. Diets came and went without success. I felt I had become a couch potato, not doing anything remotely energetic and knew this would have to change.
I paid a visit to my local gym, enjoyed it so much that I decided to become a personal trainer. After work-out sessions and getting back into playing tennis. the pounds soon began to drop off. I began to feel fit and healthy again, ready for a new challenge. Size doesn’t matter that much if you want to be a personal trainer as long as you can encourage others and have plenty of enthusiasm.
I made enquiries of how to become a personal trainer, reading a lot of information on the internet. The skills required were patience, persistency, being well-organised and a good motivator for others as well as being a good listener - thankfully I ticked all the boxes.
I quickly enrolled onto a workshop course to take examinations to get the necessary certificate. The course was challenging but I applied myself very well and was over the moon on passing with flying colours. It gave me a great boost, a new lease of life, in fact a feeling of complete achievement. The next challenge was to find a studio, a place to put my skills to good use.
Setting up my own business was what I wanted to do. I did a lot of research online about registering my company, choosing a business name, getting insurance and finding suitable premises. I was extremely lucky and soon found the perfect place. The next step was to market myself, so I set about getting flyers, newsletters and business cards printed.
Good friends of mine really helped out, many attended my classes. They thoroughly enjoyed the work out sessions and word soon spread. Before I knew it, new clients started to appear, many of them preferring to have a one-to-one personal training work outs. It really pleases me to help others achieve their goals and get fit. I can fully endorse becoming a personal fitness trainer. If I can do it, you can do it, so why not give it a go?
