When discussing the public trust one of the things we have come to count on is the ability to identify those who are in a position to help us. This means them identifying themselves in some way that gives us comfort that we are in the presence of someone of authority. We do this with many public servants. These public figures help us in many ways and when we see one of them in a security uniform we know automatically that this person in there with us to assure that we are safe. It doesn’t matter if they are armed or not, we believe that they have the capacity to help us if we need it.
There are many people who put on a security uniform every day and go out to protect people and things. You have security in banks, malls, bars, warehouses, office buildings and many other facilities that want someone on hand to take care of issues that might occur. All of these individuals will wear a uniform of one kind or another. It is most important to make sure that they stand out so that the public knows who they are, both as a deterrent to crime and a comfort to the public.
The normal security uniform will consists of pants and long sleeved shirt (short sleeved is popular too but not as professional looking). In many cases they will match in color and often the name of the company or the name of the hired security company will be located on the bicep of the arm. It is very easy to tell who the security is by this very specific identifier on the arm. This fact and the need for public trust is one of the reasons why most security uniforms cannot be bought by the general public. It is an attempt to keep the uniforms within the right population.
The normal uniform will be permanent press and easily cleaned. They have moved away from uniforms that need to be dry cleaned as most employees do not want the hassle or expense of that type of upkeep. Most employees get either an allotment of uniforms or have to go out and buy their own. In most cases they are provided for them. In some cases the security uniform will also have a tie, a hat and perhaps a jacket. It is up to the organization to decide if these are required items or not.
The security uniform is a welcome sight for most of us. There is a relaxing of nerves and a feeling of well being. This feeling does not come from knowing the guard first hand but in the way they are dressed and what that look does to the public psyche. This is the power of most uniforms, the public instantly has an expectation of what they stand for and they react accordingly. So dressing the part, wearing that uniform does a lot more than just have the employee look good it gives the public faith in the employee and what they do for a living.
