When one thinks about spells relating to voodoo or free spells relating to voodoo, it is also the case that a lot of people consider it to be religion's oldest form, all over the world, and its roots could actually be traced back in the land of Africa which occurred thousands of years ago.
It is so far from what voodoo really is that practitioners will either just find humor in the misconception, or feel insulted by it.
There are still a lot various cultures which still practice these kinds of spells despite the fact that it is considered to be possibly harmful in nature. But on the other hand, other cultures consider it to be a taboo.
These kinds of spells, that actually pertain to voodoo, are depicted by making use of pin dolls, zombies that are considered to be evil, sacrificing animals and people dancing all over their territory to the beat of the drums.

The word "voodoo" comes from West African term pertaining to spirit. A follower of this religion shows some respect and affection to god Bondye. In addition, it has made its way into the areas of the Caribbean.
But because of the non-Christian like tenets, the Voodoo took hold only in the Caribbean where Christianity (and all its branches) does not have as much influence.
The Voodoo that does exist in the western world has tinges of Christian elements that ensured its survival many, many years ago, especially when the French colonizers sought to eradicate African religion in Haiti. They had seen Voodoo as a threat to their control of the colony, which in fact it was and despite the severe punishments meted out, Haiti won its freedom and Voodoo played a big part in that victory. It took a while for the Catholic Church to make it's peace with the voodoo sect, but did so in the'50s.
In the west, the use of voodoo was not widely acknowledged and this concept was not even made public. However, even at present, voodooism is still considered to be very mysterious, and was said to have acquired certain parts of the Christians.
To show unity, Catholicism incorporated drums and melodies of voodooism to their church services. By the year'70, they estimated that around 100% of the people of Haiti are already Catholics.
These punishments, like lashings done to the people who disobeyed and still practiced their African religion, were done simply because the colonizers perceived it as a way for its colony to threaten the system that these colonizers were able to establish during this period in time.
