Computers, connectivity, internet and the digital world…what made communication possible in the digital world? How could one computer talk to another(voice telephony, chat etc)? It was through IPV 4 or internet protocol version 4 addressing, giving each node in the network a unique address. Now, does the world run of IPV 6 ring a bell somewhere?
The IPV 4 uses a dotted quad to address each system, for instance, 192.151.6.10 also known as the IP address of each system. Not only PCs, but cell phones, laptops and other handheld devices also have an IP address. Additionally, with the world wide usage of the Internet both at the PC and desktop level, IP addresses are defined for networks, internal servers, routers and Internet service providers. In the dotted quad system each part of the quad cannot exceed the number 256, with the result, the IPV 4 addressing can generate about 3 billion unique internet addresses.
IP addresses function as unique identification numbers for any system which is a part of the Internet space and is a standard, sturdy and stable addressing framework to keep track of all activities in the Internet-scape. Using the IP addressing technique, a remote system accessing data on a server, comes out in the open through its IP address (right from the geography of the place and the service provider it is using).
With the Internet ‘capturing in its net’ all the web-enabled devices from PC to a mobile phone, playstation to soda machines the 3 billion unique IP addresses generated by IPV4 would soon be exhausted by 2011. And that explains the world run of IPV6 which will use 128 bit addressing compared to the 32-bit addressing system in IPV 4. The 128 bit addressing in IPV 6 will be able to generate 3.4 * 10^38 different sets of addresses, giving a wider berth for internet expansion, as far as the limit can be envisaged from the current scenario . A typical IPV 6 will be
2002 :0ABD : AF11 : DEF1 :0000:0000:0000:000.
The need to switch over to IPV 6 is imperative as different organizations are gearing up for the transition, though there are a number of quarters in the Internet service industry, which are yet to realize the impact. Many service providers in the industry are not zestful about the prospects, for the investment required in hardware devices and the interfacing software and the configuring which will have to be initiated once IPV 6 sets in.
But at the user end, the change will not be visible, from connectivity to quality everything will appear as is, as it does with IPV 4. More so by 2012 all devices manufactured will be IPv 6 -enabled so the need for upgrade doesn’t arise with advent of the new version. However, systems with older configuration will have to equip themselves by downloading what is required to keep up with the trend.
Whether IPV 6 migration wins hands down or not, it is the only solution to meet to the Internet boom, which is expected to explode beyond the IPv 4 boundaries by 2011. True to its spirit and essence the internet connectivity is about global reach from anywhere to anything, leaving none or nothing isolated. So the world run of IPv6 has to reach its target on time before a node starts to blink.
