Based on the FCRA, anybody has legal rights to dispute errors in their credit report. Because of this people will get protected against identity theft and fraud. In other cases where the report contains illegitimate charges, you can alert the credit bureaus and respective creditors about this.

Your creditors are the ones in charge of reporting your credit details to the credit bureaus and you need to understand it. It is not rare if there is an error on your report. It might be a result of inaccurate reports from your creditors. There are many cases where some people experience this kind of problem. This is the reason why everyone is encouraged to get a copy of their report at least two times a year.

What do you do if you find some mistakes in your report? How can you dispute it totally?

How to Dispute Credit Report Mistakes

When you are really sure that your dispute is DEFINITE, you have to write a dispute letter. If you don't know how, you can surely check the internet for some free examples. This can guide you in writing a very professional letter of dispute. Just don't go and send the actual letter sample and just fill all the blanks with corresponding details.

Here's a fact you need to be aware of: Credit Bureaus receive hundreds, or even thousands of letters. Some of them are just fake ones. When you write your letter, your main goal is to receive feedback so that you can fix the errors. So, you might as well just refer to the sample as a guide and write your dispute letter using your own words.

Point out the details that you want to change. Don't forget that you SHOULD still write it professionally although if it doesn't need to be formal. Make it a point to proofread your letter and do the necessary corrections Seal it in an envelope when you're finished.

To make it easier to check the mistakes, attach a duplicate of your report and note the items you're complaining about. If you have a dispute about your bills, add a copy of the particular receipts. Then, you can send it by using post mail.

Normally, it may take up to 30 days before you get a reply. This is because the bureaus will need the allotted time to investigate. When you get a reply, you will know if your issue was resolved or not. If it was resolved, they will send you a copy of your latest and updated report.

For the changes made in your credit report, the other 2 major credit bureaus will be informed by the Bureau that handled the investigation. You also won't be charged for the updated report they've sent you.

Some issues are not resolved, mainly because the creditor denies or disproves the disputes. When this happens, you can talk with your creditor about it. Meanwhile, you can ask your credit bureau to make a note in your report whenever someone requests for it. Although, remember, you might have to pay for this request.

See, making a dispute on your credit report can be a piece of pie. You won't even have to hire someone to do it for you. If you know the right method to do it, and you're aware of the legalities, everything will go perfectly.
