2012 is fast approaching and all the time more people are beginning to believe that something big will occur. There are the doomsday thinkers who say that it will be the end of the world, and there are those that believe 2012 will be the dawn of a new age of enlightenment. The amount of theories that are floating around get added to on an almost weekly basis. Some of the most common suggestions for 2012: earth changes, solar storms, galactic alignment, arrival of ET life forms, Planet x, as well as the end of the Earth.
1. Earth Changes: A lot of talk around 2012 has focused on changes that will happen to our planet. One of the most common theories put forward is that there will be a polar shift. Historically there is data which shows that our planet does undergo a shifting of the magnetic poles at certain times.
There are scientists who say our planet had a pole shift event approximately 780, 000 years before. If this was to happen again then the results would be devastating on a massive scale. There would be the biggest ever earthquakes experienced by man, mega tsunamis, and the eruption of super volcanoes that would create nuclear winters.
2. Galactic Equinox: It is commonly accepted that every object in the universe has a number of cycles. For example we all know about the two solstices and two equinoxes that we experience on Earth annually. We calculate these through the planet's movement around the sun. But are you aware that the whole of our Solar System is also moving in a cycle in the galaxy.
There are people that believe in 2012, on the date of the Winter Solstice, our Solar System will be aligned dead centre of the galaxy in a position of equinox. It is actually known that this cycle lasts 25, 800 years. The affect this will have on our planet is impossible to understand. It is thought that the ancient Mayan long count calendar is based upon this galactic cycle.
3. Massive Solar Storms: Our sun is an incredibly active star. It constantly gives off flares some of which are powerful enough to cause disruption to the electro magnetic fields on our planet. NASA is predicting that there will be a strong solar maximum event that is likely to occur around the year 2012. This may result in massive failures to all forms of modern communication as satellites and power grids can be knocked out of service.
4. Planet X: A lot of the talk surrounding what will happen in 2012 involves the mythical Planet X or as some people call it, Niburu. This is supposedly a planet or brown dwarf (star) that is on a massive elliptical orbit in our solar system. It is believed that it is only visible from earth around every 6, 000 years. Believers in planet X point to ancient Sumerian texts and other forms of evidence to back up this theory. If such a large body was to come close to our planet then the consequences are beyond imagination.
5. Contact with Extra Terrestrial life: Some people believe that 2012 is when we as a race will have our first true contact with intelligent life forms that are from outside our solar system. This theory is only speculation!
