We all know we should eat a healthier diet. But with live as busy as it can be, there is little time left to make something healthy for dinner. It is just easier to stop and grab some burgers or have a pizza delivered, right? Well, it doesn’t have to be that way. You can eat healthy no matter how busy your life can be. It just takes a little planning a preparation.
Now I know what you are thinking, if I don’t have time to eat healthy now, how will I ever have time to plan to eat healthy? It really isn’t hard if you only do it once a week or even once every two weeks. You take the time to clean your house, do the laundry, etc. don’t you? Well look at healthy meal planning as another thing you need to do each week.
Take time to plan and shop. Face it you are not very likely to make a healthy meal if you don’t have the supplies on hand. So the first step is to do an inventory of your pantry and make a list of the things you will need. Many of the staples that people have on hand can be used in healthy cooking, you will just use less fats, sugars, and processed foods.
Sit down with a healthy meal cookbook or search on the internet for meals your family will like. You will be surprised how many great tasting meals you can make that are good for you. Your family may not even realize they are eating healthier! Once you have planned your meals for the coming week or two, make a grocery list and go shopping. Make sure you include healthy snacks and treats on your list as well. Things like fresh fruit, whole grain breads, low fat yogurt and cottage cheese.
The beauty of this plan is you do as much of the preparation as possible in advance. You can make casseroles and other main dishes all on one day and then freeze them for later use. When you get up in the morning, just put a casserole in the fridge to thaw and pop it in the oven when you get home. Add a healthy green salad and dinner is done! It was no more work that picking up the phone to order pizza.
It does take more time and effort to eat healthy. But isn’t your family and your health worth the extra time it takes? If you plan and prepare once a week, you can ensure your family will eat well with very little time invested during the busy work week.
