Reading is a skill that everyone should have. But it isn’t just a matter of know how to read, we should learn to love reading. When a person loves to read they are more open to learning new things, school work comes easier and they can broaden their interests. So how can you teach your child to love reading?
There are many ways to encourage children to read, but to really instill a love of learning takes something more. It takes a genuine interest on the part of the parent. It is also good if the parent has a true love for reading, this way the child will see you reading a book for pleasure and begin to develop their own passion for books. It is better to teach by example so it is very important for your children to see you read.
Read to your children. Even when they are old enough to read the book themselves, kids still enjoy being read to. Make a ritual of reading together as a family every night before bed. Make the story fun by using different voices as you read. Let the kids take turns reading different pages and encourage them to use character voices as well. You can even dress up in character costumes to make the story really come alive.
Do book reports. Have your kids give you a book report on the book they are currently reading. It could be a written or verbal report. It is fun for kids to get creative with their reports as well. Encourage them to make posters, dioramas, or illustrated book reports. Not only will this help them think deeper about the book they read, but it will also help them with their school work since most teachers require book reports.
Visit places you read about. If you are reading a story that takes place at a lake, visit a lake and read parts of the story there while you enjoy playing in the water. If your book involves a train, take your kids on a train ride. It might just be on a commuter train or an amusement park train, but they will relate the train to the book.
Take your kids to the library. Nothing instills a love of books more than seeing hundreds of books lined up on the shelf! Most public libraries have story time for young kids and some even provide activities after the story. Use story time at the library to get ideas for how to make your own story time effective.
You can instill a love of books in your kids, even when they are very young. In fact, it is best if you start reading to them when they are still infants. They will learn to love literature and their reading skills will help them throughout their life.
