In conjunction with a museum's animal friends exhibit, a program where six local artists will demonstrate their individual approaches to animal painting will be held. The job of each artist is to create an animal theme painting in the museum galleries and then talk informationally with the visitors telling them about the style and techniques they used to capture the image and spirit of the animals they painted. According to the executive director of the museum, there is special meaning in animals for people of different cultures and backgrounds.

For many the buffalo is a spiritual symbol or the dove as a sign of peace. A red tailed hawk may be a good omen, and the dog a cherished friend. Considering how animals have been the subjects of artistic endeavor since the beginning of time from petroglyphs to cave murals to oil paintings to jewelry they continue to remain favored all over the world.

According to this female artist she is an avid explorer of styles, techniques, and ideas. When it comes to her methods, these have been developed through a long career of teaching, consulting, in workshop presentations, and publications. Not only is she listed in the west's who's who but is also a founding member of a local society of watercolorists.

One of the female artists came from southern California and before moving to her hometown in 1983 she studied art and watercolor. Not only does she delve in themes involving portraits of people and animals but also landscapes and floral studies. Taking her style into consideration, the director says that this results from her ability to push the watercolor medium into works of unusual size without sacrificing the brilliance of transparent watercolor and her aggressive use of pigment.

There is one artist who studied at a famous college and at the art center of college of design in Los Angeles. What his work was back in Chicago was as a graphic designer but he has exhibited nationally including the national watercolor exhibition in environment. In local and regional venues, each one of the artists will be making presentations and publications aside from Springfield, Illinois.

After being able to graduate with high honors from New York's school of art, the fourth artist studied for some time at the University of California in Los Angeles. She actually won the best of show at Washington school of art's 12th annual competition. A reviewer described her work as giving a precious glimpse of human drama, full of psychological poignancy as parts of a famous director's film.

At the Kansas university school of fine arts was where the fifth artist earned her painting degree. She gives viewers a feeling of the atmosphere not to mention the mood of the subject as she paints in her own interpretive style of realism. A number of one person shows was held by this artist and she also participated in the Kansas landscape which is a traveling exhibition shown at the Smithsonian institution in Washington, DC and in juried exhibitions too.

She spent eight years studying Chinese brush painting with a noted Chinese painter and so the sixth artist culminated her study of art and refinement of painting skills. She was able to adapt this style of painting, lifted or erased during creation, to the northern New Mexican environment. It has been mentioned by the director of the museum that they are honored to welcome these distinguished artists from the society of watercolorists to the museum and their commitment to artists and designers working showing up was reiterated.

Our current animal friends exhibition was specifically selected and designed to engage and delight audiences both young and old. As the artists create portraits of their own special animal friends, the visitors will surely enjoy the workshop. Beginning in 1992 was the society of watercolorists which has a mission to encourage the production not to mention appreciation of professional quality watercolors locally and nationally.
