When Linda's great aunt passed away she felt a tremendous sense of loss even though she had just gotten together with her in a limited way in the past several years. Distance kept relatives from visiting on a regular basis, although, not a week passed when they weren't in touch by phone or letter. Linda was aware that her aunt was failing but it none the less stunned her when she heard the news that she had died. The first thing Linda did when she knew where her aunt's viewing would be held was to send flowers. Her aunt loved tending her little garden and was a lover of all blooming plants and so it just appeared proper that she should be honored in this way. Linda discovered to her surprise that it was possible to use her computer to view various arrangements and order online flowers and she was surprised to find that just this small act brought her a huge amount of consolation until she could arrive for the actual funeral.

There are many tangible ways to show respect and affection when a loved one passes away. Here are five ways that are effortlessly carried out:

Attending the viewing or the funeral is not only respectful of the deceased but it is a comfort to the remaining family members. It has been said that many people will never remember what is said to them while they are in the throes of grief but they will remember a heartfelt hug. There honestly not anything to come close to the personal touch of one human being toward another.

A handwritten note or a sympathy card is a very considerate method of extending sympathy and remains one of the best ways to contact the family of someone who has passed away. The beauty of such an expression of sympathy is that the note and/or card can be read again and again when comfort is needed. Caring thoughts are always appropriate and can be a tremendous source of encouragement to a grieving family member.

A gift of food is always an extremely warm gesture and a welcomed act of kindness to a bereaved family. It offers an individual contact that nurtures the soul as well as the body. It is not necessary for the food to be homemade as many grocery stores and meal preparation shops now offer food that is already prepared and ready to pop into the oven for a warm and comforting meal.

A gift to the deceased person's favorite charity is a practical and loving way to remember him or her. When a gift is given an acknowledgement is sent to the immediate family to make them aware that you have opted to pay tribute to their next of kin in this way.

An educational fund donation if the deceased has young children is a thoughtful gift to give to offset the ever more rising cost of higher education. With the high cost of college, this is a way to ease the financial burden on the remaining spouse and make sure that the children are sure to gain the benefit of your gift.
