What is an emblem? An emblem is commonly defined as a picture or image, which may be highly abstract and unrelated to a real object, or it may directly represent the thing to which it refers. An emblem represents a particular idea. For example, an emblem might be representative of a moral lesson or have an allegorical significance. Emblems can also represent people of great importance, such as a monarch or a spiritual leader within a faith. Commonly, an emblem makes tangible and solid something which is usually abstract, such as a spiritual god, a group of people, a national population, a positive or negative characteristic. Wearing an embroidered emblem is for identification and pride in a particular group or value.
Emblems are most commonly worn by people to show that they are a member of a particular group, association, organization, your nation and so on. They are predominantly for purposes of identification. For example, in the United States police officers wear metal badges on their uniforms and these are their personalized emblems. The metal emblem badge will often have their unique number or name for identification, while their embroidered emblem is used to identify them as one of a number of people who serve as part of a unit within the police service.
Emblems are also used to represent a group of people organized into a nation. The majority of emblems used to symbolize nations draw inspiration from nature and the natural world around them. Most commonly used are creatures such as mammals or birds; but objects such as trees and flowers are also used a great deal. A member of a nation may wear their embroidered emblem on clothing, particularly if they are representative of that nation; for example, if they serve on the government or in a governmental department.
The emblem of a nation may be depicted on items such as the nation’s representative flag and coat of arms, as well as any other objects associated with national pride. However, informal symbols that we connect with a nation should not be confused with formally agreed national emblems. National emblems are agreed and guaranteed by law, which enforces their proper use in all contexts. This is a way national emblems are more commonly used for an embroidered emblem than unofficial ones.
In some countries around the world, the population of a nation or significant area chose to be represented by a plant. This plant is usually found within that area, but now always. For some countries, there is just one plant emblem that represents the whole country. In others, there are more specific emblems that refer to specific areas within that country. Sometimes these emblems are agreed by the government and sometimes they are determined by the population itself. Australia and Canada are two countries famous for using floral emblems. The maple leaf is the most commonly recognized symbol for Canadians, and many of Canada’s flags and national symbols have this emblem on them. Canadians might wear an embroidered emblem of a maple leaf to show pride in their national heritage.
