Every tool is used for a certain purpose and it can differ from being a device or a process depending on what purpose it is used whether to create something or achieve something that may not be seen.

Tools have specific functions and there are multiple categories of tools. A tool can also be a combination of two or more other tools of different functions and these tools combined altogether do a specific function.

Certain tasks require certain types of tools. For those that involve cutting, cutting tools are normally used, hence the name. These tools are wedge-shaped or broader at one end and significantly narrower at the other. This is specifically designed to produce a shearing force along the narrow face. Basically, the edge of the cutting tool needs to be harder than the surface of the material to be cut, otherwise, the blade will become dull after repeated use. But even hard-wearing tools require sharpening which will get rid of the deformation along the edge. Cutting tools include such devices as knives, shears and sickles.

There is also what is called as measuring tools that vary depending on the quantity that is measured. Rulers and meter sticks are measuring tools in which the quantity being measured is length or distance. Measuring cups and test tubes are also measuring tools in which the quantity being measured is substance or liquid volume. The clock is also a measuring tool that measures time as the quantity. There is a long list of measuring tools and the ones mentioned are just few of them.

Tools that are used to mold the shapes and sizes of a material are called shaping tools. A baking pan is used to form the shape of a baked cake or the likes. A potter uses a mould to form the shape of his ceramics and the likes.

Tools that are used to move things, big or small and heavy or light, are called moving tools. A moving tool is used by applying an usually easy force or weight on it so that it will be able to apply more force or weight on another object effectively. Examples of these moving tools include the hammer, the pliers, the truck, and the wrench.
There are also information tools that help people control and organize data such as the computer and computer applications and programs. There are also fastening tools that make things stay in place and compacted such as welders and nail guns.

In purchasing tools, one must consider several factors. First and the most basic is quality. One should heavily consider the essence of its manufacturing including its durability, resilience, and robustness. Second is its functionality. One should take into account if the tool would live up to its label or would it serve its primary purpose suitably. Third, and probably as equally important as the previous two is the price. Expensive or cheap, the common notion is that quality doesn't come cheap. When buying tools, always take into consideration the price for the item to be purchased whether or not it suits it. Cheap doesn't always mean inferior quality. It's the consumer's intuition that matters. Always bear in mind the question, is it a good buy or is it the best buy?

Some tools are poorly made and these tools risk the health and safety of the users. Tools that are going to be bought and used should be long-lasting, effective, and at the same time user-friendly.
