Every woman needs a one-of-kind purse for a specific purpose, perhaps all purpose, but the quest starts with the bags design. For every day, for shopping, for evening or for carry-on, some can take the credit for multiple uses. Evening bags are a separate category, along with the wallet on a shoulder strap. Others could have dedicated usages for wine, diaper, potluck, laptop, fresh fruit market, and for the under 25, a messenger bag.

Tips for when first shopping: Check out a few details common to many bags. Is there quality lining and is the color acceptable? Dark linings sometimes disguise the contents. There are sometimes side slots in the inside. Will your hand fit? Can you see the other pockets and their zipper tabs, if any? What sort of handle, ""bling"" or buttons? Are there pockets on the outside. Is there a cell phone pocket?

Look carefully at the zippers. The upper zipper should usually have larger teeth than the interior areas. Look at the tab. Some have numbers, a 10 is sturdier than the smaller numbers but a 7 is not uncommon on the exterior. Closures may not always be important, and on a shoulder sling style may not be appropriate. But a purse that snaps or flaps closed is important for two reasons. Theft prevention in airports or similar locations, and every day sensible: Closed purses don't dump their contents.

Some women prefer snaps, though the construction of different types has pros and cons. When struggling with the purse in one hand and groceries in the other, a magnetic clasp can be easier to open to find the house keys.

The third can be hand or machine applied, sometimes used in highly crafted purses. With your fingers examine the area around the magnet. If properly installed some reinforcement should be evident. Some totes snap shut with the same design as found on jackets.

Handles can be the greatest source of frustration or the most agreeable part of the purse. Long handled straps should end above the hip bone, where the hand will naturally go to hold or search. A thin strap can be less secure, but have less bulk. A long wide vinyl handle is frequently unpleasant on the skin. The texture of natural cotton or hemp handles feels pleasant, but unless properly made will ""curl"" becoming narrow and no longer appealing. The casual ""rope"" handle is sturdy, but only as sturdy as its attachment.Look for double stitching.

Short handles, in addition to vinyl or leather can be constructed of metal, or wood, strapping, braiding, or heavy bead. Most purses and totes take abuse, except those chosen for for elegant evenings. Purses slump on the floor, are thrown in the back seat and are often over stuffed. Decide if the purse will be carried hanging down or under the armpit.

Before heading for the checkout, visualize what items you would normally carry around. Is this the appropriate purchase? Perhaps you have half dozen or more bags for many uses, if so you've already chosen your preferred bags design.
