When you choose to create your own baseball cap, you can let your imagination run wild. Baseball caps consist of two basic parts: the part that fits over the head and then there is the bill (the stiff part that rests over the eyes). Although baseball caps were first worn at baseball games (hence the name “baseball”), people have chosen to adorn the wardrobe accessory even as part of the regular daily uniform. Because of the versatility of the baseball cap, there are several different choices you can choose as the fabric for your cap. Choose the fabric you want based on how often you will wear the hat, and where you will wear it.
Baseball caps can be made of various fabrics such as mesh, felt, denim and even leather. The next thing you will want to decide on is the closure on the back of the hat. Closures range from elastic, meal clasps to Velcro. Determine if you want something simple to adjust the cap (which means you want to probably use elastic or Velcro), or something a little more elaborate such as the metal clasp which makes your cap look more expensive.
Now that you have chosen the fabric and the clasp on the back, now it’s time to get started. You will first need to take measurement of the head that the “hood” or cap part of the baseball cap is intended for. Take a measuring tape and measure the crown part of the head. Then place your measuring tape down on the fabric and with a pencil, starting a center point or dot, from the half way mark on the measuring tape, make a 360 degree circle using the length of the half way mark on the measuring tape. For example, suppose the crown is 18 inches. Half of 18 is 9 so you will want to come outwards from the center dot on the fabric 9 inches. Make several ticks on the fabric using this measurement then connect the ticks making a circle. Cut the circle you have made out with a sharp pair of scissors and put it aside. The next step, making the bill is not as easy to accomplish.
To make the bill, you will want to find a piece of stiff cardboard or some other material such as plastic but make your choice by the ease in which to cut it. You don’t want to have to literally saw through the material to finish your hand made baseball cap. Once you get our material, you will want to measure the width of the forehead of the person who is going to wear it. Afterwards, mark this on the material that you chose to make the bill and cut a rectangle that is at least 5 inches wide by the length of the forehead long. With a needle and thread, sew the bill to the cap part of the then attach the clasp on the rear of the cap.
With your baseball cap now assembled, the fun part is decorating it. Let your imagination continue to run ramped as you add anything from glitter to gems on your baseball cap. You can even add your favorite baseball team’s logo or colors as well!
