There's a number of ways to lose weight, basically you'll have to create a calorie deficit. This may be accomplished by either going on a diet and reducing your calorie consumption, or you will have to get rid of more calories through increased physical activity such as exercise. You may do just one or the other, but many people find that the easiest and most effective way for them is a mixture of both. Choosing just one method over the other tends to be too extreme for some people, but by combining them together they create a powerful and effective way to get rid of the weight.
While going on a diet alone seems to be effective at first delivering early results it has a tendency to fizzle out over time. While dieting and decreasing calorie consumption early on is very effective at reducing weight the reduced calorie consumption will begin to force your body to decrease it's metabolism to conserve on fuel. Thus causing your weight loss efforts to start getting increasingly more challenging as time goes on.
This often leads to discouragement and frustration and often times the dieter will throw in the towel. However, by then your body and metabolism has begun to adjust itself to the decreased amount of calories and it now sees normal eating at extra calories. Thus many individuals experience the problem of putting back the weight that was lost plus a few additional few pounds.
While increasing your daily physical activity can also be effective early when it comes to weight loss staying motivated early isn't that difficult when you're seeing the results you want. However, your body will begin to slowly adjust itself and the weight loss will begin to slow down and then it will become increasingly more difficult to deny yourself the extra calories that you burning up with the increased physical activity. By increasing your physical activity it helps to burn off more calories, however you have a tendency to want to consume more calories to make up for it. When you're seeing the weight loss results early it's a lot easier to stay motivated and keep on the program, however after the initial weight loss the results will begin to slow and your motivation to wane.
Dieting and exercise make a powerful combination because they help to offset the negative effects of one another. When going on a diet and reducing your calorie consumption a person's metabolism will slow causing the energy levels to decrease as well. Exercising helps to speed up the metabolism while helping to suppress the food cravings that the diet often creates. By combining the two you won't have to go to any extremes when dieting and exercising.
By not going to any extremes like cutting back on calories to significantly or having to work out too long or too strenuously you'll be giving your body and mind time to slowly adjust to your new eating habits and lifestyle, thus making your weight loss efforts having a much better chance of being long-term and having a permanent effect.
