When you were a kid, it's probably fair to say that your grandmother and your mother were sticklers about wearing clean underwear. And as you grew up, they probably also told you that you need to wear clean underwear in the event that you were ever in a car accident. Indeed, many people have their mothers and grandmothers to thank for wearing clean underwear.

The truth is that you mother was right about having you wear clean underwear, but there is more than one reason why this is important. Before we discuss clean underwear, let's examine the definition of underwear.

Underwear means socks, bras, actual underwear and undershirts for the men. Most people consider clean underwear to be necessary in order to observe strict personal hygiene. But what is strict personal hygiene and what does that have to do with clean underwear?

Sanitary and good personal hygiene is basically in the eye of the beholder. For instance, there are some who believe that thongs are unsanitary. Their reasoning is that the thong lies in closer proximity to particular areas of the body. What they do not take into consideration is the hygiene of the person wearing the thongs. If that person bathes regularly, and wipes correctly following all restroom usage, there is absolutely no reason why a thong would be more or less sanitary than any other underwear.

With our new working definition of underwear, and a little bit of controversy out of the way, we are ready to answer the question: why clean underwear? Well, first of all, wearing clean underwear every day is essential to smelling good. Underwear carries with them our personal and natural body odors which mean that after a day of wearing them, they begin to stink.

We as humans secrete various moistures from our bodies. Sweat is an example of a secretion that our bodies release. While it is a natural occurrence that happens to everyone, sweat does have an odor that is unpleasant to most.

In addition to sweat, our bodies also release natural oils. The amount of oils we secrete at any point in time depends on the person, the time of the year, the time of the month, the kind of activities done in a day, and many other factors. Nonetheless, washing and cleaning your underwear after you wear it ensures that its germ free, bacteria free, and pleasant smelling the next time that you wear it.

Of course, fecal matter is loaded with germs as well as bacteria, but not all people have that much fecal matter in their underwear, but if some is there, that too brings unsanitary conditions to the wearer and of course, it also creates odor. Because fecal matter may be so tiny as to not be seen by the human eye, changing to clean underwear daily is very important.

Take a walk down memory lane and recall the smell of the locker room after gym class. Recall the smell of old gym clothes smelling away in your old locker. This should be reason enough to wear clean underwear. Clean socks are just as important because the same rules apply to them. So listen to your mother and grandmother and wear clean underwear: it could save your life!
