Where do these creative artists and entrepreneurs come from? There does not seem to be a stereotypical designer. They come from all strata of society, big cities and small towns. Many are graduates of prestigious art and fashion design schools. Others started in their garages with an airbrush and a vision.

Sports shoe designs can be sophisticated or simple, colorful or bland, functional or decorative depending on what you choose. Like the diversity of their designers, no two shoes are alike. Some are painted. Others dyed. Some have glitter glued on them. Though they are all different, only the ones that catch the buying publics fancy will survive.

The popularity of sports footwear took a giant leap forward in the sixties. Styles and dress codes became more relaxed. Jeans, tee shirts and sneakers became the sartorial choice of a new generation. Many new footwear companies came on the scene offering a enormous variety of sneakers. In the seventies and eighties footwear sales exploded. The counter-culture values of the sixties went main stream and so did sports footwear.

Todays sports footwear wearers are business leaders, politicians, artists, entertainers, educators and religious leaders. Walk into any grade school, high school, college, university or trade school and you will see the majority of the students wearing sneakers. It is not uncommon to see doctors and nurses walking the halls of hospitals wearing scrubs and sneakers purely for the comfort factor.

Tennis shoes were once relatively inexpensive and many still are. But having become very popular they can cost a great deal of money. The research that goes into the higher end pairs can be extensive. The athletic shoe industry employs scientists, doctors, podiatrist, athletes and many others to continually improve their products. The competition is fierce but the rewards are great.

Fashion trends travel at the speed of the World Wide Web and sports footwear are a big part of the mix. Athletic footwear design has become a very lucrative segment of the fashion industry. Many of todays top athletes and musicians are branding themselves and creating their own sneaker lines. The market is huge and almost anyone can become a sneaker designer regardless of social station or economic circumstances. The only requirements seem to be desire, creativity and opportunity.

Social acceptability is the hallmark of any fad or cultural phenomenon. Sports footwear have been embraced by the masses and the trend shows no sign of slowing down. Sales are in the billions. Marketing empires and sports dynasties continue to help create an insatiable appetite for these comfortable shoes.
