If you're looking to buy a new games console, then this is the article you need to read. In this article, we will take a look at the three main games consoles, and then also take a look at handhelds.

The Three Main Games Systems

Everyone knows that there are really three major games consoles, which are:
· Nintendo's Wii System
· PS3
· The XBOX 360

Of course, it's entirely up to you which console you decide to buy, but this article will take a look at each of them individually so that you can get a good idea of which one might suit you best

The Nintendo Wii

Nintendo released the Wii in late 2006. According to Nintendo, the Wii is intended to appeal to a wider range of people than the PS3 or the XBOX 360. At the time of the writing of this article (early 2011) the Wii is the current leader over the other two consoles.

One of the best things about the Wii is its revolutionary approach to game control. With the use of the Wii Remote, people can be more physical in their interaction with the games. This makes gaming a much more physical activity than it was before, when you used to just sit there with a control pad in your hand.

Play Station 3

Sony's PlayStation 3 is the successor to the PlayStation 2 and was first released in November 2006. According to Sony, the new "cell processor" means that the PS3 is 35 times more powerful than their previous console.

The PS3 has impressive graphics and great online gaming capabilities. Actually, the PS3 enables you to play online completely for free, which definitely compares favourably to the subscription costs of the XBOX 360.

Now, with the release of the PlayStation Move controller, this takes the PlayStation 3 to a higher level in the gaming world.

The XBOX 360

The XBOX 360 is Microsoft's current games console, and was first released in May 2005, somewhat earlier than the PS3 and the Wii. One thing you will see that is different with the XBOX 360 is that it can stand upright rather than just lying flat.

The 360 features a powerful 3.2GHz custom-built IBM PowerPC CPU and has 512MB of RAM. in addition to this there is a custom-made ATI graphics chip. This power means that the XBOX 360 is able to produce images that are of true 720p and 1080p wide-screen high definition quality. In this regard, it is far ahead of the Wii but just slightly behind the PS3.

Handheld Systems

If you're a fan of playing games but you don't want to be stuck playing them in your house, have you ever considered getting a handheld games console? The best handhelds are:
· Nintendo DS: a dual-screen console, first unveiled in November 2004, although the DS Lite was released in 2006, and the Nintendo DSi was released in 2009.
· PSP (PlayStation Portable): this handheld unit was first unveiled in May 2004. this was followed later by the PSP-2000 and then the PSP-3000 in 2008.

There are also some other handhelds that have been released in recent years, such as:
· Game King
· Gizmondo
· Dingoo A320
· Pandora
· GP2X F-100
