Although it may be a little hard to digest the fact that an innocuous, mundane, day-to-day activity like grocery shopping could be throwing a monkey wrench in your weight loss plan, it is true. This has got nothing to do with what brands you buy or what products you indulge in. Rather it deals with the way you shop and how that can affect your dreams of losing weight.
The first mistake most people make is ignoring their grocery completely. Why have grocery lists in the first place if you are going to throw them out of the window at the first bargain that comes along? A grocery list details all the things that are essential for you and all that is needed to run your house. If that buy-two-get-three healthy and fat-free yogurt isn't on your list of things to buy, chances are that you don't need it. Besides, not everything that says fat-free is really fat-free. And that cereal you are buying at reduced price could very well be reduced quality! Think about it.
The second mistake a lot of shoppers make is sticking too close to their shopping lists and refusing to explore other, possibly better, options. You get so comfortable eating a certain breakfast food month after month that you automatically put it down on your list without giving it much thought. However, there just might be healthier options you haven't explored. Reach for that box of whole wheat pasta two shelves up. You may find it to be fortified with essential vitamins and minerals and a whole lot better than the current brand of pasta you are using. Be a little adventurous and better your quality of life.
The final, and by far the most common mistake a lot of people make is overstocking their pantry. What are you preparing for - a nuclear war in the coming days? The biblical flood? More often than not the items you happen to stock in bulk are the ones that are available at reduced prices or unable-to-pass bargains. Trust me it is best you pass, instead of overindulging in stuff you don't want. It's going to be in plain sight and you will end up eating it. That's not really part of the plan is it?
So, what can you do to avoid making these major bloopers when shopping for the month? Well, the first thing to do would be to educate yourself and become a more aware consumer. Be vigilant about what you are buying, what ingredients it has, the nutritional content, and expiration date. Don't be seduced by unbelievable prices or the fancy packing they come in.
The second advice might sound quite strange, even funny, but it really works. Go shopping for your grocery on a full stomach. When you've just eaten and you have a full tummy, you are less likely to be tempted by all the unnecessary food items on discount. It works every single time. And it keeps your weight loss plan on track. Happy shopping!
