So it's time to get rid of that old toilet and replace it with a new more comfortable and more efficient stool. Toilets can last for up to or over 40 years, so it may seem like the old toilet is just a part of bathroom, fixed in and never to be replaced. But often they do fail by rusting, leaking, making awful noises, or just aren't conserving water as much as it should. Here are a few words of advice to make the change as effortless as possible.

This is not going to be that difficult of a job to complete, and in doing so, you will learn what you need in order to install the new one when the old one is out. Make sure everything in the area is picked up and is out of the way. Grab an old blanket that you don't mind getting ruined and throw it on the floor around the stool. This way once you remove the parts you can put them on the blanket rather than marking up and scratching the floor. You will also need a large bucket, old rags, wrench, putty knife or scraper, and a mop and sponge. Most people prefer to use rubber gloves as well but you are going to get dirty anyway so it is up to you.

The first thing you need to do is shut off the water to the toilet. Usually there is a line coming in from the wall just behind the toilet. Simply turn it to the left to shut it down.

Flush the toilet to get rid of the water in the tank and stool. The remainder of the water can be wrenched out by using the mop and sponge. If you are lazy and want to get the job done fast, you can use a wet-dry vac and just suck the rest of the water out of there.

Once the water is removed, then you need to take the wrench and remove the rank in which the water was stored. The screws should be just on the underside of the tank connecting the tank to the stool. Remove the tank and set aside on the blanket.

Next you need to remove the actual toilet and stool. To do this you will need to remove the remaining screws that are protruding from the base of the stool. If they are badly corroded you should take a hack saw to saw the bad parts off. Then take the wrench and remove the bolts from the screws.

In order to lift up the toilet and remove it, you will need to stand over it and rock it back and forth to remove the wax seal. Be very careful so you don't end up cracking your floor. Pull it up and off and rest it on the blanket.

Lastly, put an old rag to plug up the hole that leads to the sewage drain and use the scrapper to remove any remaining sealant or residue.
