Recently we hear many debates regarding texting while driving. The debates usually take place on the side of the road between the texters and the State Police. But everybody else agrees that texting while driving is worse than talking on the phone while driving and as dangerous as drinking and driving.
You don’t have to be a scientist in order to comprehend the great risks involved in TWD (that’s Texting While Driving. I just made it up) but there are even published works of notable researchers who proved that text messaging is the stupidest thing to do while in the driver’s seat – the eyes are off the road, the hands are off the wheel, the head is with your BFF X BF OMG LOL and your car is heading towards that tree over there.
When a driver is talking on the phone at least he, or she, keeps the eyes on the road. It is hard to believe that after all of this, only 14 out of the 50 US states banned texting while driving.
Hey! But we know you! You are a responsible individual and you are not going to text anybody while you drive, right? We allow you to talk, but also with the proper equipment – anything to keep your eyes on the road and your head on your neck. We can not recommend an automatic texting device, because there isn’t one available yet, but we sure can recommend you to think about the following options and save your life:
1. Let your friend text for you! If there is somebody with you, let him do the SMSing. If it’s top secret stuff, switch seats or decide on a designated non texting driver before you hit the road.
2. Use a Voice to SMS app. Smart phones users can download a special voice to SMS application that allows the texter to say what’s on his mind and see it appears on the screen as a text massage. You just dictate your text message into the phone and send it to your contacts as a simple SMS.
3. Try Voice SMS! A few phone companies offer this service. It is a fast and easy (and safe) way to communicate. You just speak your precious insights and the other side receives your message in his inbox. You give your thumbs a rest and the recipient doesn’t hear the annoying incoming call ring ring.
4. If this is a matter of life and death (then you should be calling 911 and not texting) stop on the side of the road and text your brains out in a safe manner, without risking yourself or your fellow drivers.
5. Go visit Utah. Text and drive all you want. Get 15 years in prison.
