Designed for those who seek a high end rugged spiral coil binding machine, the DFG EC2000 is also one of the better buys on the market, when you consider the features to price ratio. In the following review we will take a look at the DFG EC2000, and give you some of what we consider its strengths and weaknesses.
Strengths:
1. If you go by pictures that you see on the internet, you may get the idea that the DFG EC2000 is made of plastic. This could not be further from the truth. The body of the DFG EC2000 is made of heavy die cast metal, and is clearly built to last for a long time.
2. Punching twenty five sheets of paper was not a problem, but the fit was a perhaps a little tight. You will preobably want to stick with punching twenty two pages max, though this is actually excellent capacity for most medium to large projects and applications.
3. The DFG EC2000 comes with crimping pliers, which are absolutely necessary to the process, and around a thirty dollar value.
4. The DFG EC2000 includes some other great features along with its heavy duty electric punch. The measuring device helps ensure that you always use the right size coil, and there is an always handy depth of punch margin control on the machines left side. There is also a spiral coil inserter on top, and the user can activate the punch by use of the foot pedal, which enables both hands to be used to hold the document in place.
Weaknesses:
1. The most glaring weakness of the DFG EC2000 is that there are no disengageable dies. What this means is that the user can not stop any of the individual pins from being engaged in the punching process. In practical terms this means that it ranges from impractical to impossible to punch any size document that is other than the standard eleven inches. Well, to be more exact, you can punch just about any size document, but you can expect there to be half holes on the ends of the document. This is perhaps not the cleanest and most professional look, but might be all right for low profile documents.
2. The DFG EC2000 does come with a built in electric coil inserter, but it is not the easiest one to use that we have come across. Most of the better inserters on the market come with two rollers, for instance and the DFG EC2000 comes with only one. Also, it is only six inches in length, whereas there are many binding machines on the market whose rollers extend the length of the machine. To top it off, so to speak, the rollers are located on the top of the machine, which means that you will be forced to lift the pages up. Don t get us wrong, the inserter works, it just falls a little short in the ease of use category.
Recommendation:
As a heavy duty spiral coil binding system for letter sized documents, the DFG EC2000 shines, especially for its price range. The only drawbacks are the lack of ability to cleanly bind other sizes, and the coil inserter s relative difficulty of use.
