The way of English decorating can offer one more than its usual white china and pretty picture frames. Victorian era dog portraits have now become popular among English style lovers. According to history books, about 15,000 to 30,000 years back dog pictures were drawn on cave walls.

When Queen Victoria commissioned paintings to be made of the royal children, those paintings included the royal dogs. Not only were the dogs of Country squires part of the portraits but they were also included in the titles. These kinds of paintings also held their part in the family record.

By the end of 1800 dog portraiture was a big hit and the industry was at its best. There was now a big market for people who wanted their dogs to be painted and there were also many people who responded. Great Britain had a population of 20 million to 30 million, and 6 million claimed to be animal painters.

Even the amateurs were able to sell their work today. For a fine arts consultant these were the kind of paintings that people like collecting. More common was it to have pets in pictures with mixed breeds. Portrayals of purebreds are highly collectible, says a New York gallery owner and former director of the dog museum of America. This style ranged from paintings, prints, pastels and watercolors.

The purebred portraits drew collectors more particularly if they had a breed in mind. Absolutely the hottest thing is the cavalier King Charles spaniel, mainly because it's a society dog, says a specialty store owner in the New York City area. With the best purebred portraits they are the only ones that come close to the price of the sporting portraits.

Currently, there are many places where one can find dog portraits. Many Art galleries, auction houses, private dealers and antique and thrift shops offer good dog portraits. Flea markets and garage sales may not be places you want to search in.

First, you want to research about the piece you want to buy. Take time to read book on breeds like the early 19th century breed books in case you want to purchase a piece of a certain breed.

Research is especially crucial if buying at auction. Sometimes auction houses do not guarantee that their pieces are real. There are cases when a good dealer will go the extra mile and help guarantee the validity of the piece. Nevertheless, it is always best that you do research too.
