Scientists and experts have recently been speculating on the impact that the discovery of extraterrestrial civilizations would have here on Earth. Although The Brookings Report warned in 1961 that the discovery of life beyond Earth could lead to social upheaval, more modern studies conclude that scientists and theologians believe that such a discovery wouldn't have much impact on what we do or what we believe. With such popular books and films as E.T. and others, the notion of aliens among us has become so much a part of our culture that aliens don't seem all that alien anymore. From Men in Black to The Day the Earth Stood Still, movies and novels portray a wide range of reactions to the detection of extraterrestrial life, from paranoia to alien worship. The creative genius of some of these screenwriters has also led to the belief that aliens could morph into human form and live among us, completely undetected. This theme is wildly popular, thus novelists are dishing up more science fiction thrillers of this genre. One of the most recent novels, Time is of The Essence, puts a unique spin on the idea of aliens living among us. In this compelling new release by Aldo Paredes, the main character is an alien who has been living on earth for thousands of years together with his centuries-old partner, both of which have ostensibly been leading normal lives, while chronicling human history as it occurs. An evil alien who is pursuing the pair is also responsible for many of the evils of the world--past and present. Some of history's most poignant moments will unfold before your very eyes. From the absorbing start to the explosive finish, Time is of the Essence is one satisfying thriller, with its ingenious clues and escapes, and sharp intelligence. Indeed, it's the perfect read for both E.T. lovers and anyone who likes modern thrillers. Time is of the Essence is now available through sites iUniverse Publishing (www.iuniverse.com) and Amazon.com. Albert Harrison, a psychologist at the University of California at Davis, emphasizes, "times have changed dramatically" since 1961. The cultural trends that include aliens in modern science fiction films and books have led scholarly experts to conclude that the discovery of aliens would have far less of an impact today. It's almost as if we have become desensitized to the idea that "we're not alone." Even the discovery of intelligent aliens "may be far less startling for generations that have been brought up with word processors, electronic calculators, avatars and cell phones as compared with earlier generations used to typewriters, slide rules, pay phones and rag dolls," Harrison writes in one of the papers published in the Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society A, which is devoted to a specific area of the mathematical, physical and engineering sciences. The Royal Society brought together some of the world's top authorities on the search for extraterrestrial life to reflect on what might happen if E.T. was ever found. Their findings culminated in a 17-article, 200-page document. "Any discovery of ETI [extraterrestrial intelligence] is likely to produce a mix of emotions including fear, pandemonium, equanimity and delight," Harrison wrote. "People conditioned by years of participation in UFO clubs, science fiction and an endless parade of purported documentaries may find the discovery anticlimactic."

Whether anticlimactic or delightful if aliens were discovered on our planet or beyond, one thing is certain: Aldo Paredes' Time is of the Essence is sure to satisfy even the most discriminating sci-fi, suspense thriller aficionado-a thrilling page-turner to the very end.
